Despite the rise in COVID-19 cases, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is organizing the Indian Premier League (IPL). IPL has proved to be a mega-profitable business from the time it started in 2008. In 2020, the brand value of IPL went down for the first time in 6 years. It fell by 3.6% from Rs. 47,500 crores in 2019 to Rs. 45,800 crores in 2020.
In 2020, IPL was relocated to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) because the Indian Government had paused all sporting activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, IPL witnessed lower sponsorship revenues as compared to previous years. This was because VIVO pulled out the title sponsorship at the last moment. Then Dream 11 became the Title sponsor but paid only Rs. 222 Crores, as against Vivo’s canceled contract of Rs. 440 Crores. Chennai Super Kings suffered the worst drop in brand value. It devalued by 16.5% from Rs. 732 crores in 2019 to Rs. 611 Crores in 2020.
However, IPL 2020 was very beneficial for IPL broadcasters. Television ratings increased significantly and advertisers too jumped into this opportunity.
In the 2021 IPL, Vivo is back as the title sponsor and BCCI is expecting to earn around Rs. 4,000 Crores from this 2021 IPL season. 2021 has seen an uprising trend in sponsorship revenues. Star India is paying Rs. 3,269.5 crores to BCCI for broadcasting rights. VIVO is paying Rs. 440 Crores. Apart from this, BCCI is getting Rs. 220 Crore from 5 official sponsors (Upstox, Dream 11, Unacademy, Tata Motors, and Cred) and Rs. 60 crores from the umpire and strategic time-out sponsorships.
Subsequently, there is an expected increase of 10-15% in revenues this year. Moreover, an increase in the number of teams in 2022 and the renewal of media rights in 2023 could enhance the IPL value in the future.
BCCI shares 50% of the revenues with the Team franchises as part of the central pool. And, franchises give 20% of their total revenue back to BCCI at the end of the season.
